Lighting the Way to Learning Through...

KNOWING AND NURTURING EACH CHILD

Your child will soon come to know that they are part of a community that values them. Our decisions on what materials to provide, and when and how to provide them (our curriculum), are based on our knowledge of each child’s needs and interests:

* We allow each child to truly experience the provided materials through all their senses.

* We display and value each child’s artwork just as they do it (not how an adult might want it to look).

* We give each child opportunities to share their gifts and talents in the classroom as well as time to share those things which are “valuable” to them with their peers.

* Everyday, the teachers make genuine and personal connections with each child through their conversations and actions.

KNOWING AND NURTURING EACH FAMILY

As a teaching staff, we make a great effort to have   personal connections and conversations with each family every day. We like to know our families – siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and family friends – and have them know us. Our goal is to make our school welcoming and ourselves available to parents everyday:

* We have an open-door policy and parents are welcome here anytime.

* We welcome and appreciate when family members are able to share their special skills and talents with all the children.

* We have opportunities for families to gather together and meet one another.

* Each family is celebrated through learning opportunities such as family art projects, traveling stories, traveling “pets,” and by encouraging families to bring items that are meaningful to their child such as favorite/  cultural foods, songs, or their family pets.

* Personal conferences are offered at any time parents wish to talk about a specific issue.

KNOWING AND APPRECIATING OUR COMMUNITY AND WORLD

Learning about our special community will help your child feel at home in their environment:

* Your child will meet volunteers from our community who will share their special knowledge and talents.

* We will visit places like the grocery store to buy pumpkins, the post office to mail letters, the   aquarium on the dock, the fire station, Lime Kiln Lighthouse, and the beach.

* Your child will be given age-appropriate opportunities to learn about local, national, and international places and events that interest them
